Stand for election

Member of Parliament prohibited from participating in Parliament’s work during his criminal trial: communicated

In October 2014 the applicant was elected to Parliament while a criminal case was pending against him. In February 2015 the Parliament gave its consent for the applicant’s trial to continue and, in accordance with the Rules of Parliamentary Procedure, he lost the right to participate in the sittings of the Parliament, meetings of its committees and other formations to which he had been elected or appointed by the Parliament. Furthermore, his salary was reduced by half and he lost the right to receive expenses. The applicant unsuccessfully challenged the constitutionality of the relevant provision of the Rules of Parliamentary Procedure before the C onstitutional Court. The restrictions were in force until the applicant was convicted in August 2016, losing his status as a Member of Parliament.
