FIRST SECTION
Application no. 6047/14 Antonios LYPARIS against Greece and 2 other applications (see list appended)
SUBJECT MATTER OF THE CASE
The applications concern the right to freedom of expression. The applicants were found liable in civil defamation proceedings after having published articles either in local press or on their personal websites criticising public officials (the prefect in case 6047/14) or persons occupying various posts in the Greek Association of Traditional Karate (cases 45375/14 and 45376/14).
The applicant in cases 45375/14 and 45376/14 also complains about the length of the proceedings.
QUESTIONS TO THE PARTIES
1. Has there been a violation of the applicants ’ right to freedom of expression, contrary to Article 10 of the Convention, on account of the civil proceedings in which they were found liable for defamation and were ordered to pay damages?
2. In cases 45375/14 and 45376/14, was the length of the civil proceedings, which started on 13 April 2006 and 9 October 2006 and ended with decisions no. 1595/2013 of the Court of Cassation and no. 2170/2011 of the Court of Appeal respectively, in breach of the “reasonable time” requirement of Article 6 § 1 of the Convention?
