Reasonable time

Length of civil proceedings: friendly settlement

The case concerns the length of civil proceedings brought by the applicant in January 1978. In May 1999 the parties reached a settlement which brought the proceedings to an end.

The Gover nment is willing to settle the case on the basis of a payment to the applicant of the sum of 1,800,000 escudos. This offer does not imply any recognition by the Government of Portugal that there has been a violation of the Convention.
